Progressive jackpots

Every stake contributes a fraction to a pool, which grows until it is won and then resets to a base figure. The pool can be shared by several games or operators.

Where the money comes from

That contribution is taken out of the same return the game advertises. A progressive slot's base game pays less than an equivalent slot without one, because part of the return is sitting in the pool. The jackpot is not a bonus; it is a slice of your own return, held back.

What the chance actually is

The probability is remote enough that it does not change the expected value of an evening. Some progressives also require a maximum bet to qualify, so a smaller stake can be playing for a prize it cannot win.

The ones with a deadline

Certain progressives are sold as must-drop: before a given hour, or before the pool exceeds a stated number. The guarantee is real, but it is a guarantee about the pool, not about you. Somebody wins it; the odds that it is you are unchanged.
